IT Infrastructure Library

Organisations invest hugely in IT to deliver market advantage and are becoming ever more reliant on the quality and availability of IT based services. Effective Service Management is essential to enable the IT operation to understand the business’s requirements and to satisfy them through the measured delivery of IT services, which fully meet those needs in terms of cost, reliability, availability, and performance.

Created by the UK Government, the IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is a series of documents that are used to aid in the implementation of a framework for IT Service Management. This framework defines how Service Management applied within specific organisations. Being a framework, it is completely customizable for application within any type of business or organisation that has a reliance on IT infrastructure. ITIL has been adopted across the world as the standard for best practice in the provision of IT services.

The main focus of IT Service Management is divided into two main areas: Service Support and Service Delivery. IT Service Support is the practice of those disciplines that enable IT services to be provided effectively. IT Service Delivery is the management of the IT services themselves, and involves a number of management practices to ensure that IT services are provided as agreed between the service provider and the customer. Together, these comprise the disciplines that embrace provision and management of effective IT services.
